Our Simulation Software Laoss Just Got Better!
After several months in development, our simulation software Laoss adds a brand new optical module.
The Laoss optical module sits alongside our electrical and thermal modules. Together they offer a powerful software package for the design and simulation of OLEDs, perovskite/organic solar cells and large area semiconductor devices.
The optical and electrical modules can be purchased separately. The thermal module requires a license of the electrical module and considers electro-thermal coupling. You can request a 1 month, free of charge, evaluation license.
What can Laoss optics do?
Laoss optics is a powerful 3D ray-tracer solver used to:
Simulate in- and out-coupling in OLEDs and solar cells with complex 3D optical elements or surface texturing.
Model stand-alone 3D optical elements and their contribution to the device.
Simulate optical cross-talk in OLED displays.
Laoss optics is designed for typical use cases in OLED and Organic/Perovskite PV research. Our software provides more than a generic 3D ray-tracing package and can produce a layered approach for defining a simulated device. Laoss directly accepts output from our software Setfos (Emission profile, Reflection/Transmission profile, BSDF) thus providing a fully comprehensive design and simulation package for researchers.
Defining Complex Optical Microstructures such as Backlight Units in LCDs
Laoss lets you define various microstructures by using parametrized geometries or texture file import or by loading a bi-directional scattering distribution function (BSDF) from a file. Parametrizations for microlenses, micropyramids etc. are available for quick definitions without the need for tedious drawing exercises.
The flexibility in defining optical microstructures is exemplified in the illustration above showing a Laoss representation of a light guide with diffusion dots of varying density as present in backlight units (BLU) of LCD screens. Mathematical transformations allow for the easy study of light management in bent, flexible displays.
Simulating Optical Cross-talk in OLED Displays
In displays combining white OLEDs (WOLEDs) and colour filters (CF), the colour gamut can be hampered by the leakage of light through a filter, when the WOLED of an adjacent unit is addressed. This optical cross-talk is given by light that is scattered inside the optical structure and that leaks to near pixels before exiting the display. Mitigation of light cross-talk in WOLEDs/CF is a complex engineering problem that requires the combined optimization of several geometrical parameters.
Thanks to the 3D ray-tracer Laoss can now quantify the optical pixel cross-talk in addition to calculating the electrical cross-talk (see further below). Such simulations are thus a suitable tool to optimize the characteristics of the pixel matrix without costly and time-consuming processes of device fabrication and testing.
Stand-alone 3D Optical Elements
Fresnel lenses or other optical elements can be coupled to OLEDs and solar cells to improve their efficiency. Also, the structuring of the device surface is an effective solution to increase the device light outcoupling. Laoss can model the optical output of a chosen optical element by using a powerful ray-tracing algorithm. The simulation results can be coupled to our Setfos software to study OLEDs and PVs with complex light-coupling geometries.
