PhD Position: Characterization and Modelling of Solar Cells for Indoor PV Applications
THE COMPANY
Fluxim provides device simulation software and measurement hardware to the display, lighting and photovoltaics community. We develop and commercialize simulation tools, as well as measurement equipment for all-in-one electro-optical device characterization and for device stability assessment. Our R&D tools are used worldwide in industrial and academic research labs for device and material optimization as well as for the study of device physics. Leading manufacturers and academic institutes’ breaking records in solar cell efficiency and stability rely on our tools for electro-optical simulation and characterization of emerging PV technology.
YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In the framework of the Horizon Europe Doctoral Network project MENTOR, we look for a physicist, material scientist or electrical engineer to carry out a PhD project. The PhD student will investigate diverse emerging photovoltaics technologies (e.g. perovskite, organic) which are intended for indoor applications (IPV).
The PhD project involves the following responsibilities:
Developing and performing experimental measurements for the characterization of solar cells with a focus on IPV.
Evaluating performance and stability bottlenecks in real devices, supported by drift-diffusion and finite element simulations of small as well as large area solar cells and modules.
Comparison and cross-validation of simulation and models describing experimental data, aimed at identifying device optimization strategies for improved performance and operational lifetime.
Testing and implementation of characterization standards (efficiency/stability), including integration in Fluxim’s tools.
Contributing to the development of prototypes (simulation/characterization), testing procedures and documentation.
Collaborating closely with international project partners.
International secondments (UK, Spain) on device fabrication, standardization and imaging methods.
Writing scientific publications and give presentations at scientific conferences.
With the outcome of the project, the student will help guiding Fluxim’s efforts in providing high-end R&D solutions to the growing IPV market.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate has a university Master’s degree in physics, material science or electrical engineering (or similar) and great interest in printable electronics, semiconductor physics or optics R&D both experimentally and by means of simulation. Prior research experience in emerging PV technologies is a plus. We look for a motivated scientist that enjoys working in a dynamic and international setting, and who is keen on contributing to the growing high-tech market of indoor PV.
Proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory. Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.
OUR OFFER
We offer an exciting PhD position in a dynamic working environment within a highly motivated team. Besides the academic research associated with the project, this position offers the opportunity to work in an industrial environment and actively contribute to future versions of the commercial simulation software Setfos + Laoss and the measurement tools Litos Lite + Paios. The position is embedded in an international project consortium with 16 other PhD candidates, offering regular scientific exchange, collaboration and training opportunities. The PhD candidate will officially be registered at the University of Barcelona.
Start date: 1st March 2025, with some flexibility
Gross Salary: 55’000 CHF/year
Duration of work contract: 36 months (probation period: 3 months)
